A sand flea rake is a long-handled basket that sifts sand at the waterline and keeps the sand fleas. This page compares two rake families, Exact Design and Fish-N-Mate 167, across three exact Amazon US listings. We checked Amazon live on Oct. 29, 2026 and consulted cached manufacturer pages. We have not used these rakes on a beach.
A rake is also optional. If you are still working out where to look for sand fleas and how to keep them alive, start with how to catch sand fleas.
Sand flea rakes at a glance
The three listings share a similar basket width. The handle is where they differ, and it is also the one number where two sources disagree.

| Product / variant | Basket width | Handle, by source | Assembly | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exact Design, three-piece handle | 16 in (Amazon brand description: 16 × 10 in) | 52 in assembled (Amazon listing) | Three handle sections; brand description lists fasteners and tools | Packed length not confirmed; strength untested |
| Exact Design, one-piece handle | 16 in (Amazon listing) | 52 in (Amazon listing) | No handle sections to join | Stored length not confirmed; strength untested |
| Fish-N-Mate 167 Large | 15 in (manufacturer and Amazon) | Removable. 58 in on Amazon, 48 in on the maker’s page | Handle attaches to the basket | Handle length unresolved |
Quick choices, based on the published specs:
- Want the widest listed basket and a handle that splits into sections: the three-piece Exact Design.
- Want the same 16-inch basket without sections to join: the one-piece Exact Design. Confirm how you will store a handle of this length.
- Prefer a 15-inch basket and a removable handle: the Fish-N-Mate 167, once you have confirmed which handle length you are buying.
Choose around the task and the space you have; extra handle length alone is not a reason to buy.
Exact Design and Fish-N-Mate: the differences
The two families differ less in basket size than in how the handle is built and described. Check the variant name on each card before you buy; availability changes, so confirm it on the Amazon listing too.

For a 15-inch basket with a removable handle
Fish-N-Mate 167 Large Sand Flea Rake

Exact Design: one family, two handle options. Both listings show a 16-inch basket and a 52-inch handle. One ASIN is the three-piece handle, assembled with the fasteners and tools named in the brand description. The other is a one-piece handle. Treat them as a single choice with two handle styles, not as competing products. We have not measured the packed length of the three-piece or the strength of either, so we cannot say the one-piece is sturdier or the three-piece weaker.
Fish-N-Mate 167 Large: a handle length to confirm. Amazon lists a 15-inch basket with a removable 58-inch handle that you attach to the basket. Fish-N-Mate’s own page for SKU 167 gives the same basket width, but a 48-inch removable handle, and describes anodized aluminum. We could not tell which length applies to the unit Amazon ships. It may be a revision or a listing error. If handle length matters to you, confirm it with the seller or Fish-N-Mate before relying on either number.
Basket width, mesh and handle fit
None of this is a proven effect on how many sand fleas you catch. These are the specs worth checking, and the trade-off behind each.

Basket and mesh
Width. The listed widths differ by one inch. That measurement does not tell you how much sand a basket holds, how hard it is to move, or how many sand fleas it catches. Check the basket shape and how you will carry it as well as the width.
Openings. The mesh decides what stays in the basket. Openings that are too large can let smaller sand fleas fall through; openings that are too small may hold more sand and sift more slowly. We did not confirm opening sizes for these rakes. Ask the seller for an actual measurement if keeping a particular bait size matters; a listing photo is not a reliable measurement.
Handle and connections
Reach. Consider where you can comfortably hold the handle while reaching the sand. Handle length alone does not establish that fit. The published lengths are 52 inches for Exact Design and 58 or 48 inches for the Fish-N-Mate 167.
Connections. Every joint is a place to check: handle sections, the handle-to-basket connection, and the fasteners. Check the supplied assembly and care instructions for those connections. If you are building a whole beach kit, our surf fishing setup guide lists bait on its checklist. Add a rake only if you plan to collect your own.
Transport and assembly
A removable handle is not the same as a three-piece handle. The Fish-N-Mate 167 listing describes a handle that detaches from the basket; it does not establish a three-section shaft. The three-piece Exact Design splits the handle into three sections. The one-piece Exact Design has a continuous shaft; that description does not mean the basket and handle form one inseparable part. A folding basket was not confirmed for any of these listings. Allow for the listed basket width when checking storage space.

What the sources confirm:
- The three-piece Exact Design has three handle sections, and its brand description lists assembly fasteners and tools.
- The Fish-N-Mate 167 handle is removable and attaches to the basket.
- The one-piece Exact Design has no handle sections.
What they do not: the shortest length of any of these rakes once taken apart, the length of each section, or whether one fits your bag or vehicle. If space is tight, measure it and ask the seller for packed dimensions first. Check the one-piece listing for its own contents rather than assuming it matches the three-piece.
When buying a rake is unnecessary
You do not need a rake to start. If you only want a few sand fleas for a short trip, collecting by hand is a reasonable first step, and the sand flea guide covers it. Compare a rake if you want a dedicated basket for sifting sand. We have not measured whether it gathers bait faster than hand collection. A homemade basket is possible, but we have not evaluated a design or its mesh, so we do not recommend one.

A smaller option we could not include. Tsunami sells a sand flea rake with a 10-inch basket. The maker’s page lists a removable 50-inch handle and a weight of 0.8 lb. Academy’s listing for a model with the same basket describes a 40-inch handle. We could not confirm that these are the same revision. The cached maker’s page we consulted contained both add-to-cart and coming-soon text, and we found no confirmed Amazon listing, so there is no buy button here.
Why Fish-N-Mate’s medium rake is missing. The maker’s page for the 181 Medium lists a 10-inch basket, but also a 45-inch figure and a handle length written as 42 feet. That is likely a typo, and we did not guess the correct value. We could not verify an Amazon listing either.
Questions before choosing a sand flea rake
Use these questions to check the listing against what you need to carry and use.

Does a wider basket mean a better rake?
Not necessarily. The listed widths differ by one inch, which does not establish a difference in catch rate or effort. Mesh openings and handle fit may matter as much. We have no catch data for any of these rakes.
Is a three-piece handle easier to pack?
It splits into three sections, so it should pack shorter than a single long piece. We do not know by how much, because the sections’ lengths are not published in the sources we read. No folding basket was confirmed.
Why do Fish-N-Mate 167 handle lengths differ between listings?
Our live Amazon check on Oct. 29, 2026 showed a 58-inch removable handle. A cached copy of Fish-N-Mate’s SKU 167 page, crawled roughly three weeks earlier, listed 48 inches. We do not know why they differ. Treat the length as unconfirmed until the seller or maker confirms it.
Do you need a rake to catch sand fleas?
No. Our catching guide describes hand collection as an option. A rake adds a purpose-built sifting basket, but it is not required to start.
How we checked: On Oct. 29, 2026, we checked the three Amazon US listings (ASINs B07XTPKMPS, B0CFZGG2YW and B005IUSGBW) for variant name, basket width and handle details. For manufacturer details we consulted cached copies of the pages linked above, plus Fish-N-Mate’s 167 page. Prices, ratings and review counts did not affect the selection and are not shown. The drawings on this page are original illustrations, not photos or measurements. See our research and affiliate disclosure for how the site earns. You can also find these exact variants in the gear catalog.
